When should I go to urgent care?

You need urgent care when you have an unexpected or sudden illness (acute ailment), minor injury, or chronic disease flare-up that needs immediate or same-day attention. Urgent care is also a good choice if your primary care physician isn’t available.

When should I go to the ER instead of urgent care?

Emergency rooms are uniquely staffed and equipped to provide advanced medical care. The ER team always gives priority to patients who have the most severe injuries and life-threatening conditions. That’s why you often wait a long time for conditions that could be treated at an urgent care clinic instead.

The following conditions need treatment at the ER:

• Severe pain
• Head or eye injury
• Seizures (a first seizure or a seizure lasting more than five minutes)
• Sudden loss of balance or fainting
• Sudden, severe headache
• Sudden vision changes
• Broken bones or dislocated joints
• Severe vomiting or diarrhea
• Known or suspected poisoning or overdose
• Open wound or heavy bleeding
• Cuts requiring stitches (deep or large cuts)
• High fever with a rash, stiff neck, or headache
• Heart attack (chest pain, difficulty breathing, sweating, and pain in your jaw or arm)
• Stroke (weakness in one arm, drooping on one side of your face, difficulty speaking)
